Florida Power & Light Nest Relocations

Florida Power & Light Nest Relocations

During the summer of 2015, Florida Power & Light (FPL) replaced some wood utility poles with concrete poles. I was concerned about the nest by the maintenance yard that was used last season by a Great Horned Owl and her two owlets.  I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that FPL moved the nest to a wood pole and erected new concrete poles for the power lines.

I was asked to check the wood pole on the golf cart path leading to Buck and Doe Lakes as it had been used by a Pileated Woodpecker as a nest cavity. The second photo below shows the saved nest cavity (notice the bird on top of the wood pole). They cut the wood pole section with the nest cavity and attached it to the concrete pole! FPL workers did the same thing with a pole at the storage yard.

I sent a letter on behalf of the Nature Center to the project manager thanking him, his crew and FPL for saving “our” nests. I later heard my letter is hanging in the project manager’s conference room.
