Red-Shouldered Hawk

Red-Shouldered Hawk Photo Album

Welcome to the TGO Nature Center’s Red-Shouldered Hawk Photo Album. We hope the photographs below will help in identifying this beautiful bird.  Be sure to click on the photos to get a closer look at these magnificent birds.

Jim Dick took the amazing photos below of juvenile Red-Shouldered Hawks on March 1, 2016. Jim had this to say about his encounter: “At the golf cart crossing on East Plantation, I noticed a hawk sitting on the roof of the house on the Link 2 side. It flew away as I pulled into the path but another flew towards me from the other side of the road. The first one then made a turn and both flew toward the dog walk path. I proceeded down the path and found them at the top of a dead tree. Here are some shots. After I took quite a few shots of both sitting on the tree, one flew away. The second one finally decided to leave but somehow got caught up in the vines. It dropped a few feet but then was able to stay airborne and flew off. Wish I could have followed it more with the camera but it happened too fast. ”

Notice in the third photo the muscular legs.  No wonder these birds can pick up good size prey.

Jim Dick snapped these wonderful photos on January 31, 2016.  Here’s what he said about this encounter:  “I spotted a Red Shouldered Hawk near Lake Judy. It had been sitting on a surveyor’s stake near the milkweed. By the time I got the lens changed and ready to shoot, it flew into a palm. It was really dark and I didn’t expect to get a good shot but a couple came out OK.”  Great shots – click on the close up to get a good look at this bird’s face.

The photographs below were taken by Bob Root on Windsong Way.  Cary Salter identified this bird as a Red-Shouldered Hawk (pale South Florida Race).  Cary said that “if you have a bird guide, check the differences between “regular” race and pale south Florida race. Can look like a completely different species!

Rick Ellwanger took the wonderful photo below of a standing Red-Shouldered Hawk.  Rick told me  “…when I pulled up on him he was staring at me as if saying ‘take my picture chump!’ So I did!”  And we’re glad you did, Rick.
