2015 Great Horned Owl Nests

2015 Great Horned Owl Nests Photo Album

In 2015, a Great Horned Owl took over the nest on the utility pole near the maintenance yard that Ospreys had used in previous years.  Then it was discovered that there is a second Great Horned Owl nest in a dead/dying palm tree on Oak Cove.  We are fortunate to have wonderful photographers at TGO who are sharing their photos of these birds.

I have separated the photos by the location of the nests and hopefully we will continue to get photos so we can watch the development of these owlets.

2015 Great Horned Owl Nest At Maintenance Yard

A great horned owl has taken over the osprey nest on the utility pole near the maintenance area. The owl is hard to see due to the height and depth of the nest but you can sometimes catch a glimpse of its pointed ear like tufts of feathers (you can see them in the photo below — look left of center pointing left). THANK YOU Jim Dick for sharing this great photo.  This photo was taken on January 3, 2015.

Bob takes such great photos, he has been asked about the camera and lens combination he uses.   So being the sharing kinda’ guy that he is, here’s what he uses.

Bob Root sent in these photos he took on March 3, 2015 of the “Maintenance Yard” owl and owlets.  Since we have discovered there are two Great Horned Owl nests at TGO, I’ll refer to them by their new names – which is the location of the nests.

Jim Dick caught the incredible photos below on March 8, 2015.  The babies look like they are getting so big!  Look at the photos above of just five days ago.  Jim’s photos below show the babies’ feathers look like they are going from the downy stage to more adult looking feathers.  We have been watching them grow up through this series of phenomenal photographs!

On March 17, 2015, Jim Dick captured the Maintenance Yard Owlets and a parent as seen below.  Click on the first photo and look at the expression of the owlet on the left.  It’s as if it is thinking “Whooo are YOU looking at?”.

Jim Dick took the photo below on March 26, 2015.   He relayed the following information in an e-mail on March 26:  “I was told yesterday, by my neighbor, that at least one of the twins was on the crossarm of the power pole. They certainly are getting close to fledging!”  Thank you so much, Jim, for continuing to give us updates and photos documenting the development of these owlets.

On March 28, the first “Maintenance Yard” owlet fledged. On March 29, Sandy Juba received a call reporting the second owlet had fallen from the nest. Fortunately, it survived the long fall. Sandy put the owlet on the roof of Howie and Bev Moquin’s port across the street from the nest as the mother owl was often seen in the pine trees between their port and the Welcome Center.  But the little one fell to the ground again. Sandy was finally able to get it in the tree with its mother. Let’s hope these two newest TGO residents are doing well and maybe one day they may have their own owlets for us to watch grow up!

George Nulanz took the photos below of the owlet that fell out of the nest on March 29, 2015.

Well, I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks!  Bob Root told me how to put this video he shot of the two “Maintenance Yard” owlets onto our website.  Cool!  He took the video on April 12, 2015.

2015 Great Horned Owl Nest On Oak Cove

On February 27, 2015, Jim Dick sent us the photo below of a Great Horned Owl sitting in what looks to be a dying palm tree on Oak Cove (anyone know why owls like dead or dying trees as that’s where they have nested the last couple of years?).  Notice how Jim captured the amazing colors of this owl.

There has been one owlet spotted in this nest.  Please let me know if anyone sees a second owlet.  So far we have not received any photos of the owlet.

Be sure to click on the photo to get a close up view of this owl.

Jim Dick took these photos of the “Oak Cove” owl and owlet on March 9, 2015.  The owlet feathers are barely visible.

Jim Dick took the photographs below on March 12, 2015.  The owlet is finally standing up high enough to get its picture taken. Mama owl is sitting in the pine tree located behind the palm tree which houses the nest.

John Burrus took the photos below on April 4, 2015.  The first photo is of “Mom” and the other three are of the Oak Cove owlet.

On April 9, Debi Wing provided an update on our Oak Cove owlet and she included the photos taken by John Burrus on April 4. As Debi explained, “this is the fledgling great horned owl that crash landed in a practice flight in the back yard of our friends, Terry and Jean Badyna, on Oak Cove one evening. The next morning it scrambled up onto the palm tree. The parents were in constant attendance. They were watching us closely as we admired their baby, but we kept our distance. One parent brought it a squirrel which it wolfed down. The next day it took flight again with the parents but stayed close, then the following day all were gone.” Thank you Debi for the update and John for the great photos.
