We have been fortunate to have Great Horned Owls at TGO for a number of years.  We are usually lucky to have nesting birds.  In 2015, we had two Great Horned Owl nests.  You can see the photo album of these birds by clicking here.

Jim Coyle took the photo below of a Great Horned Owl with a rabbit on February 15, 2017.

Gary Wittstock shot the photo below in March 2016 of two Great Horned Owls.  Here is what Gary had to say:  “And these two owls were sitting in the pine across from our … residence, talking to each other about something. Fun to watch. Light was weak but digital cameras can handle pretty high “film” speeds to compensate enough to hand hold. No time to set up a tripod.”

I wonder if these two are the same owls who produced last year’s owlets.

The photo below was taken in April 2015 by Gary Wittstock.  This year’s young owls have fledged so we are not sure if this is one of the adults or a younger fledged bird.

Here is what Gary had to say about this photo:  “Our Great Outdoors Community Church steeple is a great resting spot for many of our resident birds. One of my personal favorites is this Great Horned Owl that’s appeared nightly several times in a row now. I see mostly turkey vultures on this roost so I’m guessing the Owl wins this dispute when he determines it’s HIS time (or her time?) to take over. This has been so far a challenging shot as the bird is backlit by the setting sun and just silhouetted against the sky.  I’m hoping to capture the dispute I’m imagining as the Turkey Vulture and Owl argue for roosting rights.”

Gary Wittstock sent in the two photos below on August 27, 2015.  He sent this description about the encounter with the top Great Horned Owl and a couple of Red Shouldered Hawks:

“Sandy and I pulled into our driveway and heard a couple Great Horned Owls nearby. After a careful search through some thick pine branches I enjoyed watching a pair hoot out to each other for 10 minutes. They were both too deep into the needles to get any decent shots. However, wouldn’t you know but a pair of resident Red Shouldered Hawks decided they’d land in the same two trees as the owls. I don’t think the owls appreciated it as they snapped their beaks loudly & repeatedly as I’ve seen them do when I had the nest in our yard. Gotta be a warning! The Hawks paid little attention and they flew back and forth a couple of times. I got these shots of them screaming their own message back to the Owls, “Hey, these trees don’t belong to YOU!

Love shooting from my driveway which doesn’t happen every day!

The Hawks finally left. And the owls unmoved decided to nap. Went back 30 minutes later hoping to catch the owls flying away and they were still sleeping peacefully. Our good fortune at 237 Plantation. Maybe our owl chicks from 503 OC followed us! LOL”

With the photo above, Gary sent the photo below and explained:  “The Owl steeple shot came a week ago as he sat on one of his favorite perches. I like how his feet and claws wrap around the cross.”

Be sure to click on the photo to get a closer look at those feet and claws!
