 TGO Nature Center Volunteer Opportunities

The Nature Center at The Great Outdoors is fortunate to have volunteers who help out on a number of volunteer opportunities. We can use some extra hands to lighten the load for everyone. We have a variety of  volunteer opportunities. Do you like to work outdoors? We’ve got you covered. Do you like to decorate for the holidays? We have a couple of decorating opportunities. Do you like yard sales? You’ll love working with our flea market team. Do you want to volunteer short term or long term? We welcome either option. Since we like to pair a person’s interest to a volunteer opportunity, we have created this list of volunteer opportunities from which you can choose. We have year round and seasonal volunteer opportunities but you do not have to make a long term commitment. Contact the team leader listed to begin volunteering today!  Team leaders contact information is in the TGO phone directory.

Nature Center Openers and Closers

Joni Bennett’s team of Nature Center openers and closers needs volunteers year round to ensure the Nature Center building is open for visitors 365 days a year. You will open the building at 8:00 a.m. and close it between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. for a two week shift. If you would like to be a member of Joni’s team, please contact her.

Gardening

We have a small garden area next to the Nature Center porch extending to the Staghorn Fern we have on display. Our team would be responsible for weeding the area and adding pine needle mulch when available. Any suggestions for new plantings to enhance our native plant garden would also be appreciated. If interested, please contact Linda Somers.

Flea Market Volunteers

If you love having yard sales, you are going to love our annual flea market in mid-January. The flea market is one of our biggest fund raisers and it takes many volunteers to pull it off. On the Friday before the flea market, we need volunteers to pick up large items (volunteers with pick up trucks are also needed), price, sort and put items on tables. On Saturday, the day of the flea market, we need cashiers, baggers and volunteers to help customers and assist in clean up. Contact Barbara Meyers (her number is in The Happenings).

Trail Cleaning

We have eight walking/hiking trails around TGO that get overgrown during the summer rains. In the November thru January time frame, we walk all the trails removing downed debris or hanging palm fronds. All you need are rakes, loppers, and proper attire. Help is always appreciated in this endeavor. The more team members, the quicker it gets cleaned. Contact Sandy Juba.

Social Volunteers

We have a number of socials planned for our “in season” months.  We could use volunteers to help set them up and clean up after they are over. Contact Sandy Juba.

Nature Center Holiday Decorating

Join our Nature Center holiday decorating team on the weekend after Thanksgiving to help decorate the Nature Center for the holidays. We will take down the decorations in January. Contact Sandy Juba.

Nature Center Golf Cart Decorators

Join a team of creative Nature Center decorators to help decorate a golf cart for the community Christmas parade in mid-December. Contact Pam Phillips.
