On February 22, 2016, Nature Center volunteer, Linda Somers, hosted a group of Nature Center members on a pontoon boat ride at Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. This field trip was a “members first” event meaning Nature Center members had the first opportunity to sign up and if there were any spots left, it would be opened to the TGO community.  With only 16 seats available, it was filled up in just hours of the announcement with a waiting list!  Read Linda’s description of this adventure below and see some photos of the day.  Click on any photo for a closer look.

“Pelican Island, America’s first wildlife refuge, is aptly named.  We were fortunate to see hundreds of pelicans both brown and white as well as many other wading birds. Most entertaining was watching their dive-bombing antics during several feeding frenzies before roosting on the island for the night.  Dave Brown provided interesting commentary and Mother Nature outdid herself with a beautiful sunset at the trip’s conclusion.  Capping a “One Fine Day” experience, we had dinner at Marsh Landing Restaurant, a unique place whose walls contain interesting artifacts of the quaint town of Fellsmere.”  Linda Somers
