A dozen TGO Nature Center members gathered at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center November 13, 2015 to learn about the Florida manatee (trichatus manatus latirostrus).

During a half-hour Powerpoint presentation, members were treated to hands on looks at manatee bones and artifacts, while learning that boat strikes cause most manatee mortality. Other hurdles the animals face include habitat loss, cold waters, pollution, and slow reproduction rates (one calf born every three to five years).

Attendees boarded the MINWR bus and saw many manatees at both the MINWR Manatee Observation Deck, and the Bair’s Cove Boat Launch, at Haulover Canal.

Stay tuned for upcoming members-only field trips.
